Fresh Air System (FAS)

Overview

The Home Ventilating Institute developed the Fresh Air System label to educate homeowners on the benefits of whole-house ventilation systems. Based on code adoptions, whole-house ventilation systems are now a requirement of roughly half of new, single-family homes and multifamily units in the United States. According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Energy, "whole-house mechanical ventilation is a critical component to a comprehensive strategy for good indoor air quality." The Fresh Air System labels are distributed by the manufacturer with individual whole-house ventilation units and applied by an installer or builder.

The EPA provides guidance on outdoor air quality through their AirNow site to help homeowners determine the use of their fresh air ventilation system. If outdoor air quality is very poor, homeowners should turn off their whole-house ventilation system, otherwise, it should be left on at all times.
